Always welcoming new friends
All are welcome to join us Sunday mornings for morning prayer at 9:30 AM.
The First Universalist Church is located in the heart of downtown Providence, Rhode Island. We believe through Christ there is salvation for all. In these turbulent times, we offer a Christian, ecumenically-minded church home that is securely anchored in the Gospel. We are open to all the Lord's people, dedicated to building up the Body of Christ in the city named for God's Providence.
What to expect on Sundays
Not your Average Universalist Church
At First Universalist, no one is expected to understand everything right away. Learning a new worship structure takes a few tries. We offer many resources to help you feel at home and follow along - no questions asked. Participation is encouraged but not mandatory. Our only goal is to help you connect with Christ and recharge your soul with a structured service created to promote reflection and calm in an every changing world.
We strive to be a friendly and welcoming Church home for anyone whether they are:
-
Looking for a New Church Home
-
Curious about what we do as Universalists
-
Searching for a community that is friendly and inviting
-
On a faith journey and/or learning about the many varieties of worship that Christianity offers
-
Anyone who is looking for a comforting and supportive space as they navigate difficult times ( we are open to assisting anyone who comes in and worships up whatever resources we can offer at the time)
On Sundays, we follow the Order for Morning Prayer. While being a little bit old school, we are consistent in providing a predictable structure every week with some changes for ease of use to assist our modern-day audience in participating in a more traditional approach. The Church Bulletin guides you through the service telling you everything you need to know and where to find it.
We use Bibles, Hymnals and our prayerbook. We hear readings from the Old and New Testament, Psalms ( said together) and the Gospels. The Pastor's sermon is based on these readings; designed to elaborate and unpack on the teachings of the Bible and what they meant then, and what they mean now for modern day Christians and their daily lives. You many even spot some jokes (or three ).We also recite the Lord's Prayer and the Winchester Profession of Faith weekly as a way to reaffirm our Baptism.
Singing is encouraged! You won't be alone since we have a wonderful Organist accompanying us for all our singing needs. Everyone is encouraged to sing or hum according to their comfort level (we don't judge if you don't want to sing in public). Along with our hymns we also have a small amount of sung responses and moments of celebration like singing the Gloria Patri, the Magnificat, or the Doxology:
"Praise God for whom all blessings flow".
